Northern Minnesota is overlooked for bass fishing. The locals call them "weed carp" and scoff as we whip spinnerbaits and rats along the weedlines.
The bass up here grow to about 19 inches and then just get fat. In the spring and late fall, they resemble footballs! |

I was guiding for friends Jayne Hanson and Barry Kohnke of Carroll, Iowa when Jayne stuck this pig on a willow leaf spinner bait during the third week of June '07.
Good work Jayne. |

Barry Kohnke of Carroll caught this great Minnesota largemouth while working a dense weedline from the back of my Lund. Who says you can't catch nice fish when you are fishing second or third in the boat? Notice how these northern bass just get fat! The best time of year for bassin' up north is typically mid June to around the fourth of July. |
|
It's great when you can introduce young people to fishing. This is Karissa Trobec, the daughter of Dr. Jay Trobec, meteorologist for
KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, SD. She nabbed this nice bass and struck a great camera pose while fishing with me on Munson Lake, MN. |
|
My son Nathan caught this bass on a plastic worm in August 07 on Munson Lake in northern MN. |
|
Here's Nathan and his friend Will with a pair of nice Minnesota bass that were released after this shoreline photo.
Both of these fish were caught on Berkley Power Worms in 15 feet of water. |
|
You will see a full moon in the background as "Lightning" Rod Raygor
displays
a nice northern MN bass caught during the first week of July. |
|
The sun sets on another great day on the water. This bass whacked a topwater
Scum Frog on
July 9th. |
|
My niece Emily did some June dock fishing and tricked this little largemouth
into biting.
Not much better than kids having fun fishing. |
|
Cloudy fall days and topwater baits go hand in hand! Late September and a
nice LMB. |
|
September 22 was a good day for fellow helicopter pilot Matt Horn while
fishing a 500 acre lake south of
Detroit Lakes, MN. This was Matt's largest bass ever. |
|
Believe it or not, the water temperature was in the lower 50s, but fall bass
are hungry and will hit topwater baits as they feed up for the long winter
ahead. |
|
This is my dear friend, John Hatfield, who I have spent many years fishing
and flying with. |
|
A nice largemouth hits my favorite spinner bait. Double willow with white
and chartreuse blades rigged with a 6 inch trailer. |

Pilot Matt Horn with another respectable 17 inch pearl of a largemouth. |
